A landfill can be divided into cells and, by using a round-robin approach, each cell can be filled, treated and excavated on a rotating basis. This technique, not only eliminates costly closure, monitoring and liability costs but also allows the cells to be inspected and repaired as required to ensure environmental integrity.
As well, the often long, arduous and costly exercise of developing a new landfill is entirely eliminated. By using the sustainable cell concept, the life of an existing landfill can be extended indefinitely.
